Our story

Founded in 2004, the Niagara Varsity Football Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing elite football opportunities for athletes across the Niagara Region. The club was established with the goal of fielding a Junior Varsity (U16) team in the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), giving local players the opportunity to compete at the highest level without leaving the region.
As the program grew, the club expanded to include a Varsity (U18) team in 2005 and a Bantam (U14) program in 2007. Since its inception, the Niagara Spears have remained committed to developing athletes both on and off the field by providing high-level coaching, competitive opportunities, and a clear pathway to the next level of football.
Over the past two decades, the Niagara Spears have become one of Ontario's premier football development programs. Representing athletes from more than 25 high schools across the Niagara Region, the club has built a reputation for excellence, producing players who have gone on to compete in U Sports, the NCAA, the CFL, and on provincial and national teams.
The Spears are about far more than winning football games. Our program is built on the values of teamwork, accountability, respect, discipline, and family. We believe in developing confident young leaders who carry these values into their schools, communities, and future careers. Every athlete is challenged to put the team first, support their teammates, and strive for excellence in everything they do.
Today, the Niagara Spears continue to unite athletes from across the region while providing an elite football experience that prepares players for success both on and off the field.
Timeline
Key Milestones
2004 – The Beginning
The Niagara Spears Football Club is founded to provide Niagara athletes with access to elite-level summer football without having to leave the region.
The club joins the Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL), fielding its first Junior Varsity (U16) team.
2005 – Building the Program
The Spears expand by adding a Varsity (U18) team.
The program quickly establishes itself as one of Ontario's emerging football organizations, capturing its first OVFL Varsity Championship.
Spears athletes begin earning selections to Team Ontario and Team Canada, while the club celebrates its first alumni advancing to Canadian university football.
2010 – Expanding Opportunities
The Spears introduce a U14 program, allowing younger athletes to begin elite football development earlier.
The organization becomes recognized as a premier pathway to U Sports and NCAA football.
2011 – First CFL Alumnus
Former Spears player John Surla signs with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, becoming the club's first alumnus to reach the Canadian Football League (CFL).
2020 – Overcoming Challenges
The COVID-19 pandemic forces the cancellation of the football season, but the Spears continue athlete development through virtual training and coaching.
During Ontario's league restructuring, the organization transitions from the OPFL to the Ontario Summer Football League (OSFL).
2021–2022 – Strong Return
Following the pandemic, the Spears rebound with strong participation at the U14, U16, and U18 levels.
Players and alumni continue earning provincial and national recognition while the program continues its growth.
2023 – Championship Success
The U16 Spears capture the KJ Kenemey Memorial Cup Championship, adding another major title to the club's history.
2024 – Two Teams in the Finals
Both the U14 and U18 teams advance to the KJ Kenemey Memorial Cup Finals, showcasing the strength of the program across multiple age divisions.
2025 – Continued Excellence
The U16 team returns to the KJ Kenemey Memorial Cup Final, continuing the club's tradition of competing for championships.
Present Day
Today, the Niagara Spears are recognized as one of Ontario's premier football development programs.
Over the past two decades, hundreds of alumni have gone on to compete at the U Sports, NCAA, and CFL levels. The club continues to unite athletes from across the Niagara Region while developing players, leaders, and champions on and off the field.
